Guest Speaker - Fran Weiss
Fran, a very active family member in our affiliate, is a counselor at Blacksburg Middle School
who advises the Student Diversity Team which includes trained peer mediators. She will speak
about diversity issues including racial, ethnic, gay/lesbian, and all disabilities addressing what
is being done in the Montgomery County Public Schools to address prejudice in our
community. Prejudice still exists in the NRV - an example is the recent vandalism of the
Tolerance Wall at our school.
Other Agenda Items
1) Reports and plans of the subcommittees, including among others, the finance committee (includes MHA/CIT funds), emergency and scholarship committees, Marion visitation committee and guest speaker committee. 2) Discussion of the upcoming NAMI-NRV elections at the May meeting.
3) Support group focused on Fran's talk and stigma and discrimination.

Each general meeting may feature a speaker on a topic of interest to families and consumers. Members of the general public will also find these subjects educational and informative. NAMI-NRV meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the New River Valley Community Services, Against All Odds Clubhouse (220 E. Main Street - Radford).
